SUMMARY

 

The Manufacturing Manager will plan, schedule, and manage the day-to-day activities of the manufacturing production processes, including machining and assembly operations for custom and standard products and systems. They will ensure manufacturing performance, volume, and quality goals are met by utilizing efficient methods, adhering to the approved budget, and maintaining a safe and productive work environment. The role requires a technical background to interpret customer requirements, read technical drawings, and assign appropriate resources to meet project demands.

Supervisory Responsibilities

 

Manages the manufacturing team, including machine shop and assembly technicians, in Indianapolis to ensure a safe, productive, efficient, and positive working environment. Promotes employee morale, development of key skill sets and competencies, and team-oriented behavior to achieve production requirements and high customer and employee satisfaction. Supervises roles such as CNC Machinists, Assembly Technicians, Production Assistants, and Team Leads.

 

Duties:

  1. Understand and interpret customer requirements to develop equipment functional specifications and performance requirements.
  2. Schedule workflow through assembly and manufacturing departments to meet customer on-time delivery (OTD) expectations, targeting >90% OTD.
  3. Minimize scrap/defects in machining and assembly functional areas.
  4. Complete projects within the established budget to achieve targeted gross margin.
  5. Assign daily tasks to machine shop and assembly employees.
  6. Quote machining and assembly time required to complete jobs.
  7. Coordinate with outside machining sources as needed based on workload.
  8. Obtain material and tooling quotes as needed per job.
  9. Create, test, implement, and check machining and assembly production processes, seeking continuous improvement.
  10. Determine and provide training required for employees.
  11. Train employees and new hires in procedures and methods.
  12. Maintain and enforce safety procedures in accordance with Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) policies.
  13. Schedule and coordinate 5S initiatives.
  14. Establish optimized workflows to efficiently complete projects.
  15. Cross-train employees on all machinery to provide operational backup.
  16. Work with the Materials Manager to maintain inventory of all materials required in shop/assembly areas.
  17. Identify and pursue product and process improvements.
  18. Collaborate with engineers on process improvements for standard products.
  19. Establish routine and preventative maintenance programs for all equipment.
  20. Schedule outside repairs as needed for machine tools.
  21. Perform employee evaluations and disciplinary actions as needed.
  22. Provide accurate estimates of production costs and employ cost-effective processing techniques.
  23. Make decisions regarding layout, size, and range of services or products, and design work processes.
  24. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree (four-year college or technical school) preferred in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of production and/or machining experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience.
  • CNC programming ability required.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical schematics, panel layouts, mechanical systems, and industry standards (e.g., ASME welding requirements).
  • Good general knowledge of material and manual machining.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Proficient in using inspection tools.

 

Language Skills

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Reports, email correspondence, and schedules are typical requirements and must be professionally communicated.

 

Mathematical Skills

Strong mathematical skills required for production planning, cost estimation, and process optimization.

 

Reasoning Ability

Must multitask and operate in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a disciplined approach to oversee all process-related needs. Ability to solve practical and complex problems and deal with situations where limited standardization exists.

 

Computer Skills

Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Prior experience with ERP (e.g., SAP) and CRM systems preferred.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record required at the time of hire and periodically thereafter, meeting company insurance standards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position operates in both an office and warehouse/manufacturing environment. The environment has a moderate noise level, moderately controlled temperature, and moderate exposure to dust. Employees must maintain clean and organized work areas and adhere to all workplace safety standards.
